Epoxy/Urethane Floor Coating

Epoxies are the foundation of most floor coating systems, and urethanes are ideal as a topcoat over an epoxy base.

Epoxies

Typical applications for epoxy based floors include: aisle ways, manufacturing facility floors, battery charging areas, auto service centers, warehouses and airplane hangars.

The two main epoxy products are Polyamide, which usually contains about 30% solvent and has a high VOC, and Aliphatic, which is usually 100% solids and very low VOC.

  • Polyamide Epoxies: These products are ideal for low traffic areas, line striping, or when mechanically abrading the floor isn’t possible. Due to the percentage of solvent in these products they are limited to 3 to 5 mils per coat.
  • Aliphatic Epoxies: These products are the most widely used due to their low VOC and the ability to be applied very thickly, acting as a leveling coat on thin mil systems, as broadcast coats for quartz systems, and as the resin base for slurry/trowel systems up to ¼”. Epoxy can be applied as a topcoat, but urethanes offer wear characteristics due to their chemical composition.

Urethanes

Urethanes are ideal as a topcoat over an epoxy base because they are UV stable, which means they won’t yellow or amber over time, and they have up to three times better abrasion resistance than epoxy.

Urethanes also offer chemical resistance to chlorinated solvents, hydraulic fluids, jet fuels, acids, alkalis, alcohol, detergents, salt, cutting oils and grease.

Urethanes are available in solvent based and waterborne versions. Specialty Coatings can determine the proper solution for your needs based on a site visit or phone consultation.
